Background Story

Chris Hadfield

“As a teenager, it was hard for me to figure out what was important in my life. And trying to find the answer helped me come up with three simple rules, which I still use today just as much as I did when I was 17:

1.      Get educated – we are lucky as Canadians to have so many opportunities to learn new things. Take a course, learn to SCUBA dive, study a new language, get a degree, learn to play an instrument. Always be working on learning something new.

2.       Be healthy – whatever body you have, you can make it stronger and more fit, more capable, every day. Take the stairs, do some sit-ups, don’t get the French fries, drink more water. But not always, life needs to be fun!

3.       Do good work – if you’re going to do something, do it well. Pay attention to detail and do it completely. Choose work that is challenging, fun, and interesting for you. Find a career that is fundamentally exciting to you. That way, no matter what jobs you do along the way, you’ll be headed in a direction that suits you.”

When Rhonda Clarke went to the mall, she never expected to find a life changing experience.

Rhonda discovered the “Summer Jobs for Youth" program at her local shopping centre. Toronto's Tropicana Community Services had a special booth set up and told her about the program that brings youth together with employers. Excited by the idea, Rhonda worked with the Tropicana staff to fix up her resume and attended classes to help with the interview process.

Armed with motivation, a positive attitude and a great resume, Rhonda went looking for a job and was hired by Sportchek the same day! While the program may have helped Rhonda get the job, her work ethic helped her excel. Her performance reviews are incredibly positive and her boss loves the fact that she is a quick worker who doesn't procrastinate. Through this position, Rhonda discovered she's a real people person. Inspired to help others, Rhonda plans to enroll in college and is torn between taking Early Childhood Education and Social Work.

Whatever route she decides to follow, Rhonda realizes she has earned much more than a paycheque with her job. She has gained experience that will help her in everything she does, establishing a strong foundation for her future.
