My story: “I created Reading Rocks! when I was 11 years old. It’s a program to help children who are behind their grade level in reading and comprehension skills. This gave me the idea for our program. I felt there was a need for reading resources in my neighbourhood. Kids go through books quickly and it’s tough for parents to buy new books, especially in low-income areas. I also help in packing Christmas gift boxes for kids in developing countries, something I’ve done since I was 3. I volunteered for Operation Christmas Child, organized by Samaritan’s Purse at my church. Last year, I started it in my school. The church packed about 85 gifts and my school made 137 boxes that contain clothing, school supplies, hygiene items and toys for children overseas” Learning experience: “Reading Rocks! has been an amazing experience. It’s pretty cool because when kids start out, some ask, “You want me to read 100 books? You’re kidding!” But many are way past that number in a year.” We have a celebration for everyone in the program on January 27 every year, which coincides with Family Literacy Day. It’s great that I can help so many people. I think my biggest lesson has been to never give up. Get inspired: “If you see something, instead of saying you don’t like it, do something to change the situation. Find your passion. For example, if you’re into sports, maybe you can help coach a team. Generate ideas, talk to friends, and find a way to help.” Melanie was nominated for the Canadian Living Me to We Award 2008 and was among the three finalists in the Youth category across Canada.
