My story: “I was bullied, and I eventually became a bully because I thought it was how I could regain my confidence. I stopped when I realized that it was a terrible cycle that had to be stopped.

After finding teachers and other people who supported me, I was able to change. I decided to write about bullying because I knew that I wasn’t the only one going through it. I wanted to help other kids. I wrote a book called “Superheroes don’t have Dads” about bullying, self-esteem and a single parent family.

My company, Stand tall and Speak Out – Voice for Children and Youth, gives other youth the guidance, support and tools to deal with bullying and other hurtful behaviours. I have now started another company called Global Youth United for Success with over 15,000 youth members from all over the world. This journey started when I won a writing contest by Educate With Vision after my teacher sent my story to the competition in Grade 3. I then went on a cross-country speaking tour in schools. I guess it just blossomed from there and now, I visit places around the world and talk at different events. It’s thrilling to see people connecting with what you’re saying. When I talk, what gets to teens and kids is another kid talking to them! It’s not an adult from a position of power.”

Learning experience: “I visited schools in Argentina this summer, thanks to a teacher there who read my book and helped to organize a trip to visit her country. I met kids who had been on the street since they were 5 - some had been addicted to drugs. But I saw them playing soccer with a wrapped up sweater. They were just happy to be alive and have a chance to create a better future for themselves. They gave us an awesome gift when they couldn't afford it. This reinforced my belief that it’s important to give and share.”

Get inspired: “You have to find your passion, work hard and never give up. Always believe in yourself. It takes getting up when you fall down. Ask for help by talking to your mom, your friend, and teachers.”
