Billy Talent "I really felt like my life was falling apart. I had always wanted to be a drummer in a rock band but was told I should 'take it easy'. I remember saying 'yea right' in my head. I didn't let something like Multiple Sclerosis get in the way of me becoming who I was supposed to become."

Amanda was a regular 18 year-old. She was in first-year university, had a great group of friends and a loving family. But one day her world was turned upside down with an ”abnormal" test result from a routine doctor's appointment. One test led to another... and another... and another... until she was finally diagnosed with cervical cancer. “My best friend's dad has just died of cancer which made it even more scary," says Amanda. “At first I just wanted to stay in bed and be miserable. The toughest thing was to not run through a million different scenarios. But instead I pushed myself and tried to go about my normal life. I only conquered it by staying positive." Luckily, the doctors had caught the cancer early due to Amanda's regular check-ups. She underwent minor surgery, and the doctors were able to totally remove the cancer. She didn't have to go through chemotherapy, and she didn't have to take time off school. ”No woman wants to go to those doctor's appointments, but the alternative can be so much worse. The early detection really made a difference for me." Amanda is now 100 per cent. Her doctors monitor her situation every three months, so that it can never happen again. She has definitely learned a lot from the experience. “My advice to anyone else going through this is to be strong and try to be there for other people. Reaching out to others made me feel like I was not alone." Amanda adds, ”It's amazing what you take for granted. The little things now matter so much more."
