Question:

I am currently in grade 12 and attending Brock University for social sciences (psychology) in the fall. I was wondering if there are any opportunities to find employment in the field of psychology such as child and youth services, counseling, or even kids help phone. Any summer job pertaining to that sort of field would be great! Thanks!

Lindsay
Niagara Falls

Answer:

Hi Lindsay, there are opportunities in various fields of employment. The easiest thing would be to visit http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/document/brochure/summejbe.html and find your closest Summer Jobs office. As a registered Summer Jobs participant, you will have access to a database of employers that are currently hiring students for the summer. Also, they can assist you in finding that perfect position for the summer.

Question:

Every teenager is in high need of getting a job so why is it that only certain area codes can apply?

Ashley
Windsor

Answer:

Hi Ashley. The Youth Opportunities, Summer Jobs For Youth (SJFY) program is intended to give youth who reside in identified underserved or “priority” neighbourhoods and opportunity to develop employment skills and obtain safe and positive employment experiences through paid employment and thereby, participate in/contribute to the betterment of their families and community. Please visit http://edu.gov.on.ca/eng/tcu/employmentontario for further information.

Question:

Can you apply for a summer job if you won't turn 15 until the summer? Also the flyer I picked up at school only applies to certain postal codes why is this not available to everyone?

Cassidy
Windsor

Answer:

Hi Cassidy, this all depends on when you turn 15. The summer jobs programs run until the end of August and if you are using the Summer Jobs For Youth Program, the length of that program is a total of 7 weeks. So basically, to use this program, you must turn 15 by the beginning of July. Please see the response to Ashley from Windsor (above) to answer the 2nd part of your question.

My friend and I are looking for summer jobs so we can earn some extra money for the summer. To spend on .....well..... girl stuff!! We love spending time together and we're both quite smart so we have decided to make money together, split it and then go shopping. We have been having some trouble, though. I have visited lots of sites but they all give us the same ideas for summer jobs. We are both the same age, 11. We find it hard to find employment. Any suggestion?

Hi Sarah, you can both do yard work, cutting grass and such. Assisting the elderly, pet sitting or dog walking and of course, there are the regular jobs of babysitting, selling lemonade, paper routes. Being 11, you are limited in what you can do. Hope this helps.

Question:

How do I get part time job since I'm looking for job but can't find any job. I do have my resume with experience on and all that stuff but can't get job. Would you give me any tips? I work in subway last year but I quit there because too far from home but now looking for another.

Muhammad

Answer:

Hello Muhammad,
I find that there are a few ways to job search. Going out in person is a great way as it shows that you are going the extra mile to have a face to face with someone.

Another tip for job searching is cold calling. This is done by contacting employers that you would want to work for and see if there is any opportunity for employment. Many of the jobs out there are not advertised and cold calling is a great way to find out about the positions. When you are ready to cold call, make sure that you have a quiet place and have a 30 second summary of your qualifications. Many employers conduct preliminary screening interviews over the phone. The better your telephone techniques are, the better your chances are for getting an in-person interview.

Finally, networking is telling everyone you know that you are looking for a job. They will more than likely tell someone they know and so on... So when a job comes up, someone will have you in mind.

I hope that this answers your question and best of luck in finding the opportunity that you are seeking.

Question:

Steven - Is it better to include your references directly on the resume or wait until you've been granted an interview to disclose that information? Employers in this area ( Thunder Bay ) seem to feel that you should provide your references upfront, or else you're most likely "hiding" something. I don't want my references to become frustrated with me for handing out their personal information to "just anyone". Any advice? Thanks a bunch

Sarah
Thunder Bay

Answer:

Sarah, in today’s job market it’s standard not to include references on your resume. It’s much better to use that space for important skills, experience and education. Therefore, you should create a separate sheet that lists your references and bring that to the interview in case the employer asks for them. You are not “hiding” something by not including them on your resume. You are being respectful to your references by not handing out their personal information

Question:

I was told that I could work at the age of 14 but most program seem to only apply to 15-18 year olds. Are there summer employment programs available to responsible kids my age? If not do you have any other suggestions? Thank you.

Karissa
Overbrook

Answer:

Karissa, unfortunately, these programs are geared towards youth that are 15 and over. Most establishments such as offices, stores, arenas and restaurant bussing are available to 14 year old youth. The best way to apply is to go in person and ask for an application form. It is great to have a resume on hand when doing your job searching. If you need assistance with writing a resume, visit your local resource centre for assistance.

Question:

I am going to be 17 by the end of June, and am looking for summer employment. The summer jobs for youth sounds like a very good opportunity. I was wondering though; what is the job description. All it says is the pay per hour, how long you will be working, and that you will gain job experience, but doing what?

Jon
Tecumseh

Answer:

Jon, Youth Opportunities Strategy, Summer Jobs for Youth is a program funded by the Ontario government. It targets high needs neighbourhoods within certain cities in Ontario . It works with youth aged 15 to 18 in these neighbourhoods and puts them into work placements for 6 weeks. The pay is usually minimum wage. The job descriptions, hours/week and experiences depend on the individual employers.

Unfortunately, Tecumseh is not part of these neighborhood areas, but for your needs, you can access Service Canada Centre for Youth. They are located at 400 City Hall Square East Suite 202 , Tel 519.560.2481.
